|Only standardized workshops can replace the Standard Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) with a hybrid or electric powertrain|
New Delhi (Auto Desk) A recent notification issued by the Road Transport and Highways Ministry has been proposed to amend the Motor Vehicles Act, 1989. Under this notification, retro fitment of hybrid or the electric system will be approved in existing vehicles. According to the notification, retro fitment will be divided into three categories and it will have to meet the requirements of AIS-123 standard. However, this notification is yet to be passed. The government has taken this step to reduce the pollution caused by vehicles. After the hybrid system installed in petrol and diesel vehicles, the cost of running a car can be less than 50 percent.
What are the three categories?
- According to the draft, in the first category, there may be hybrid systems in passenger vehicles, small goods careers, and vehicles with less than 3500kg.
- In the second category, hybrid systems can be installed in vehicles that weigh more than 3500 kg and in the third category, motor vehicles are to be converted into electric operations, in which the combustion engine can be replaced by an electric engine.
- Only authorized workshops can replace the Standard Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) with a hybrid or electric powertrain. In addition, electric or hybrid kit manufacturers or suppliers must take government-approved testing agency certificates.
What is special in the system?
Some technology companies are working on installing electric or hybrid motors in petrol, diesel or CNG cars. Apart from this, the battery is also fitted in cars, also called retrofitting. After this retrofitting, your car can run with electric powertrain instead of petrol or diesel engine.
How does this work?
KPIT Technologies has made this product called Revlon. This system has an electric motor which the engine connects to the fan belt. This is also linked to lithium-ion batteries, after which it can be easily charged. Electric motor generates power in crankshaft of petrol or diesel engine, which increases the fuel efficiency by up to 35 percent and reduces emissions by 30 percent. Other such companies are also providing electric kit. In this case, Tara International Company is also present which provides electric or hybrid retrofitting kit. By applying this company’s system, the cost of running the car can be reduced to 60 percent.
How is this system installed?
Electric Vehicle India Company offers 2ft or 3ft black box with motor, a controller for motor, chargers, and battery management system. A unit contains about 800 to 1000 batteries. Apart from this, different kits are installed on the basis of horse power, whose range ranges from 800cc to 2500cc. Within 7 to 8 hours, there is a unit electricity charge and its speed can range from 100 to 120 km.
What is its cost?
If we start talking to the entry-level hatchback car then its cost for Maruti Alto is up to 80 thousand rupees, while its cost for big diesel SUVs or sedans falls to about Rs 1 lakh.
